NARRATOR
Few people are aware of the thankless tasks carried out by our loyal public administrators.
Let us take a moment to listen in to two such faithful public servants as they go about their daily duties in a back room somewhere in Owl’s Head.

OFFICIAL 1
I hate this job.

OFFICIAL 2
You say that every day.

OFFICIAL 1
That’s because it’s true every day. Take the case of this weirdo south of the river.

OFFICIAL 2
What weirdo?

OFFICIAL 1
You know, that drunkard who built a monumental eyesore out of wardrobes and giant chess boards on his village lot. He even has a hot tub in there somewhere.

OFFICIAL 2
Ah yes. I remember processing all those public complaints. If I recall correctly I sent an inspector down there to order him to take it down. What happened with that?

OFFICIAL 1
The inspector returned with a message, and then promptly quit. Said he had better things to do with his life.

OFFICIAL 2
That’s odd. What was the message?

OFFICIAL 1
It’s a statement.

OFFICIAL 2
OK, what was the statement?

OFFICIAL 1
No, no, that’s what the message said. It said, and I quote, “It’s a statement.”

OFFICIAL 2
It’s a statement? It’s a freaking statement?
This unemployed drunkard builds a house out of giant chess boards balanced on wardrobes, violating every city ordinance and construction regulation in the book,
and all he has to say for himself is “It’s a statement”?

OFFICIAL 1
Well, he has point.

OFFICIAL 2
What do you mean, he has a point?

OFFICIAL 1
Have you seen the number of identical buildings springing up?
It’s these Avatars. They turn up, disappear for a week, and suddenly they have a plot of land with the most expensive building possible on it.
It’s suspicious, it’s unfair and it’s downright nauseating.

OFFICIAL 2
Look, I’m not saying I disagree with you, but regulations are regulations. Who knows where such chaos will lead. Did you issue him with a summons?

OFFICIAL 1
Nope.

OFFICIAL 2
Why not?

OFFICIAL 1
I didn’t issue him with a summons because he wasn’t doing anything wrong. While doing research to fill in the appropriate paperwork, I discovered that his plot is zoned as “Parks and Residential”.

OFFICIAL 2
So?

OFFICIAL 1
Well, it turns out he has officially declared that his lot is a park, and his structure is a sculpture celebrating the inventor of beer.
He has generously donated his sculpture to the city, but is now claiming the annual artist’s grant for public works.
The one that nobody else has applied for this year.

OFFICIAL 2
Oh no!

OFFICIAL 1
Oh yes. We have no choice but to award it to him since he is the only applicant.
That isn’t all, however. In fact, here’s where it gets really interesting.
The city is legally obliged to appoint guards to patrol all public structures, and that includes his sculpture, which is now owned by the city.

OFFICIAL 2
A costly nuisance, yes, but why is that interesting?

OFFICIAL 1
Our drunken friend has applied for the job to guard his sculpture.

OFFICIAL 2
That crafty devil! The rules force us to award the position to the person best suited for the job, and since he lives inside the sculpture, he is the obvious choice!

OFFICIAL 1
Exactly. [PAUSE]
Want to knock off early today? I could do with a drink.

OFFICIAL 2
Absolutely!

SCENE I

NARRATOR
It is late afternoon on a warm summer day in Owls Head, one hour after Gabriel Nightshadow and his new friend, Nystal TimeLord, departed following the events of Of Shadows and Light…

[Door opens.]

CLARISSA
Thomas, are Mr. Womby or Mr. Vyrin around?

NARRATOR
Eighteen year old Thomas Mauser glances up from the book he was reading behind the counter and sees a very familiar, attractive, sixteen-year old brunette female staring at him.

THOMAS
I am afraid not, Clarissa. They’re both way on business in Ardoris and left me in charge until they return tomorrow. Is there something I can help you with?

CLARISSA
Perhaps you can, Thomas. Miss Olivia assigned us to write a five page paper on the Obsidian Empire. I am interested in writing about the possible causes of the collapse of the Empire. In our textbook, History of New Britannia, Vol. I, the great historian, Theodric, made reference to an ancient text entitled, The Journal of the Obsidian Mage, Amin Zul. It is considered to be one of the few firsthand accounts we have about the inner workings of the Empire. According to Theodric, only three copies of the book are said to exist. By any chance, is there a copy here?

THOMAS (whispering)
Well, as a matter of fact, you are in luck! However, you must promise never to tell anyone what I am about to show you!

CLARISSA
Ok, I promise to keep it a secret.

NARRATOR
Thomas pulls a small silver key from his pocket and opens the locked chest behind the secret compartment located underneath the staircase. He pulls out a massive leather bound book which has gold edged parchment and hands it to Clarissa.
On the cover is the engraved symbol of the Obsidian Eye and the title The Journal of the Obsidian Mage, Amin Zul in gold leaf.

CLARISSA
Thank you so much, Thomas! I am curious. If this book is really that rare, how were Mr. Vyrin and Mr. Womby able to obtain a copy?

THOMAS
This is the original copy of the book. As you can see, it is signed by both Amin Zul and his personal scribe, Vash Norrell, who was my maternal grandfather. It was entrusted to Mr. Womby by Lord Baldrith, one of the members of the New Britannia Theater Troupe.
CLARISSA (curious)
Hmm…and how did Lord Baldrith obtain it?

THOMAS (cryptically)
Ah…you will have to read the journal to unlock that mystery! I recommend skipping forward to the last entry.

CLARISSA (puzzled)
OK…

NARRATOR
Clarissa lugs the massive tome over to the nearby table and sits down. She begins reading the last entry…

SCENE II

NARRATOR
Two hundred years ago, during the height of the Obsidian Empire…

AMIN ZUL
I had just completed the tenth year of my apprenticeship to the great Obsidian mage, Lorin Dar, and had begun to question his teachings. When I was first assigned to him, I considered it a great honor to learn from one of the Obsidian Eye’s former apprentices. At that time, Lorin Dar was a kind and devoted husband and father, seeking to bring order to the chaotic world which had resulted from the Great Cataclysm 200 years ago. But as the years rolled by, I noticed a marked change in his behavior. He now seemed obsessed with using transformation spells at the site of the Grunvald shard fall to create monstrous creatures to serve the Obsidian Empire.
On that warm, moonlight summer night, my master (who was now the third highest ranking member of the Cabal of Obsidians, following the unfortunate death of the mage Andorf) had me accompany him to the Shard Fall. I was instructed to bring along his teenage daughter’s white kitten, Mimsy, and place her in the center of the mystic circle which he had inscribed on the ground. I looked at the frightened kitten as she meowed loudly and pawed at the invisible force field generated by the glowing red crystals which surrounded her.

AMIN ZUL (somewhat reluctant)
Master, are you sure we should be doing this? You know how much Meghan loves Mimsy. She would be heartbroken if anything were to happen to her!

LORIN DAR (dismissive)
Bah! She will get over it! Small sacrifices must be made for the greater glory of the Empire! I must see if my newest transformation spell will work properly and Mimsy is the perfect test subject…”

[Lorin Dar lets out an evil laugh.]

AMIN ZUL
Lorin Dar pulled out some unfamiliar reagents from his pouch and began casting a spell. Mimsy began to glow bright red. She quickly grew to the size of a bear and sprouted large leathery wings on her back. Her teeth and claws became quite large and sharp and her eyes became blood red. My master recorded his observations about the test subject in a glowing orb which he held in his right hand.
Mimsy let out a loud roar and gave me an angry look. I suspected she had been unhappy that I had not prevented my master from conducting this horrible experiment on her. The force field created by the the crystals began to shimmer as Mimsy swiped at it with her mighty claws. Suddenly the field collapsed completely. A long serpentine tongue sprang from Mimsy’s mouth and wrapped itself around my neck! I found myself quickly being dragged towards her as she stood up on her hind legs and raised her long, razor sharp claws!

AMIN ZUL (gasping for breath)
Master, help me! I can’t break free! She’s choking me…

AMIN ZUL
Lorin Dar cast another spell and a bolt of black energy struck Mimsy in the back, stunning her momentarily. My master quickly placed his new invention, a prototype Obsidian metal obedience collar, around her neck, which mystically adjusted itself to the proper size. Mimsy suddenly became docile and released her hold on me.

AMIN ZUL (breathing heavily)
Thank you for saving me, master!

LORIN DAR (annoyed and impatient)
Yes, my work is too important, and I don’t have the time to train another apprentice! The power of the shard fall enhanced my transformation spell and my experiment has been a resounding success! I have created my own variation of a homunculus! Now, my young apprentice, I have a task for you to carry out.

AMIN ZUL
What task, master?

LORIN DAR
I want you to travel to nearby Mount Hellath and bring me back a dozen petals from a hecamun plant.

AMIN ZUL
But master, they will be difficult to find at this time of year. If I leave now, I may not return until sometime tomorrow evening.

LORIN DAR (impatient)
Then you best be off then! Mimsy is only my third successful creation . General Crayt, commander of the Westreach Army of the Obsidian Empire, wants to see the seven new creatures I have promised him for combat within a week! Unlike my brethren, who treat him like a lackey, I have treated the General with respect. I have promised him great wealth and power if he aids me in my ascension to the highest rank among the Masters of The Obsidian in Desolis.

AMIN ZUL
Yes, master, I will depart as soon as I retrieve my staff and backpack from my cottage! All hail the glory of The Obsidian Empire!

AMIN ZUL
Little did I know as I turned and left that would be the last time I would ever see my master alive…

SCENE III

NARRATOR
The next morning, Lorin Dar’s wife, Constance, came downstairs and found her middle son, Robert, busy writing at the kitchen table. A tall, but rather thin and frail, albino, with long flowing hair, eighteen-year old Robert had always been Constance’s favorite, for he had inherited her interest and gift for writing.

CONSTANCE
What are you working on dear?

NARRATOR
Robert put his quill down and turned towards his mother.

ROBERT
Good morning. Mother! I was writing a tale about the time of The Great Cataclysm, when our ancestors were forced to live in underground caves in order to survive.

CONSTANCE (worried)
Don’t let your father see that! You know how much he wishes you were more like your big brother, Nestor.

ROBERT (agitated)
Mother, you know I have no desire to practice necromancy or any other form of magic! I wish to be a great writer someday, like you were before you met father.

NARRATOR
Constance suddenly had a sad smile on her face.

CONSTANCE (wistfully)
Yes, those were the days. I had hoped to become a great novelist, but alas, fate had other plans for me…Did I ever tell you how handsome and charming your father was when I first met him? At the time, he was a rising star in the Obsidian Order and seemed so eager to change the world and make it a better place for us and our descendants.

ROBERT (angrily)
But all of those years of practicing Obsidian sorcery have changed him mother! He is no longer the kind and gentle man you once knew. He barely acknowledges any of us now, except for Nestor. Often I have heard him late at night, yelling at you for not raising Meghan and me properly and then slapping you. How many times have you quietly cried yourself to sleep? He shouldn’t treat you that way!

CONSTANCE (sadly)
Oh my son, how I wish I could take you and Meghan away from all of this! But it’s too late for that now. Your father has become too powerful. Were we to attempt to escape, I have no doubt he would have the three of us killed in some horrible fashion.

ROBERT
What are we to do then, mother? We can’t continue to live like this…

CONSTANCE
I don’t know son… But for now, you should keep a better eye on your sister, Meghan. Although she is only fifteen, I’ve noticed that she uses her extraordinary beauty to flirt with many rich and powerful older men who shower her with expensive gifts. I suspect your father plans on marrying her off soon to General Crayt’s son, Jorden.

ROBERT (angry)
Captain Jorden Crayt, the commander of the Seventh Legion? All that brute knows is combat. All he talks about is the glory of battle and the thrill he experiences as he decapitates and dismembers his foes. I have heard stories from other soldiers that he always cuts out his opponent’s heart and then cooks and eats it later to absorb their strength!

CONSTANCE
That is not so unusual son. I have heard that a significant number of General Crayt’s men follow the same practice. No wonder his legions inspire so much terror wherever they go…

ROBERT (horrified)
That is so barbaric! Have we fallen so far that we have reverted to being savages? What happened to the golden age of peace and prosperity which the Empire promised us?

CONSTANCE
Remember, dear, that the Obsidian Eye said that would not occur until all of the Empire’s foes were defeated. From what your father says, it will be many years before that happens…

(Insert “Medieval Draft” by Sharm)

NARRATOR
Constance’s teenage daughter, Meghan, came running down the staircase, her long blonde hair glistening.

MEGHAN (bubbly)
Good morning, everyone!

CONSTANCE
I must head to the market caravan now. Meghan, dear, make sure you eat something for breakfast.

MEGHAN
Yes, mother!
NARRATOR
Meghan grabbed an apple from the basket of fruit in the center of the table and took a bite.

CONSTANCE
I will be back in about an hour.

[Door opens and then slams shut.]

MEGHAN
So, what are you up to this morning, big brother?

ROBERT (cheerful)
Writing another story, dear sister!

MEGHAN
I can’t wait to read it! It’s a pity that father does not know how to appreciate your fine writing!

ROBERT (bitter)
You know perfectly well that Nestor has always been father’s favorite…

MEGHAN
Yes, he certainly is. That necromancer magic which Nestor is studying really creeps me out. I would much rather go shopping for fine dresses and jewelry than deal with a bunch of dead things… But Nestor has always been that way, hasn’t he? I remember the first time I found him dissecting a dead rabbit in his room! He was actually sniffing the dead rabbit’s severed left paw…

ROBERT
Well, Nestor’s always been a bit odd…Always kept to himself. As far as I know, he never had any friends. I’m not surprised he turned out the way he did…

MEGHAN
I think I will pick a bouquet of fresh flowers from our garden out back for mother when she returns from the market! I think that will cheer her up a bit! She seems so sad lately…

ROBERT
I think that would be an excellent idea, dear sister!

MEGHAN
Have you seen Mimsy anywhere?

NARRATOR
Meghan prepared a fresh bowl of milk for Mimsy’s twin brother, Turlow. Turlow meowed softly before beginning to lap the milk from the bowl.

ROBERT
No, I haven’t. Perhaps she is playing in the garden.
MEGHAN
She knows better than to do that! I hope nothing has happened to her. I have heard a lot of wolves howling late at night this past week.

ROBERT
I’m sure she is fine!

MEGHAN
I hope so…

[Door opens and then slams shut.]
.
NARRATOR
About forty-five minutes later, Meghan returned with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and placed them in a vase in the center of the table.

MEGHAN
How’s the story coming along?

ROBERT
Almost done…

(Insert “Loss of Honor” by Douglas Yassen)

NARRATOR
The door suddenly swung upon and their father, Lorin Dar, walked in. The big smile on his face was rather disconcerting, for neither Robert nor Meghan had seen their father smile for many years…

LORIN DAR (friendly)
Children, I need your help with something…
ROBERT
Yes, father, how can we be of assistance?

LORIN DAR
Follow me!

[Insert “Combat and Control (Percussive Negotiation)” by Kailef)

NARRATOR
Robert and Meghan followed him down a long, winding path to the shard fall as high noon approached. Robert could not help but notice that the ground was covered by green leaves, an odd sight for this time of the year. As they reached the center of the shard fall, Robert and Meghan suddenly found themselves trapped in an invisible force field. The green leaves suddenly vanished, revealing a mystic circle surrounded by glowing red crystal crystals on the ground.

ROBERT (shouting)
Father, what is the meaning of this?

LORIN DAR (cackling with glee)
You and your sister are about to serve the Obsidian Empire as weapons of war!

NARRATOR
Lorin Dar’s eyes turned pitch black as he pulled out some reagents and uttered an incantation.
Robert and Meghan screamed out in pain as they began changing…
Their father pulled a small glowing orb out of his other pouch and began speaking.

LORIN DAR (cold and clinical)
This is my first experiment with transformation magic on human subjects.
The two test subjects, a teenage male and female, are rapidly expanding in size.
Increased mass is accompanied by growth of body fur which matches the subjects’ hair color.
The two subjects’ fingernails have transformed into razor sharp claws about six inches in length and their teeth have increased in size and sharpness as well.
Subjects display enhanced strength and dexterity as they attempt to escape the mystical force field surrounding them.

ROBERT AND MEGHAN (screaming)
Father! Please stop this! The pain is excruciating! We are your children!

LORIN DAR (snarling)
No, Nestor is my only child now! He will carry on my bloodline and bring glory to the Obsidian Empire!

NARRATOR
Constance, who had just returned from the market caravan, was shocked at what she saw. She dropped her basket full of groceries and ran towards her husband.

CONSTANCE (screaming)
. Stop this madness at once!

NARRATOR
Constance slapped her husband across the face.

[Insert slapping sound effect.]

Lorin Dar glared at his wife.

LORIN DAR (furious)
How dare you strike me, you ungrateful witch!
NARRATOR
Lorin Dar cast a powerful gust spell in her direction. Robert and Meghan watched in horror as their mother was flung backward and smashed the back of her skull against a nearby floating stone shard. She slumped to the ground, dead.

ROBERT AND MEGHAN (screaming in horror)
NOOOOOOOOOO……!

NARRATOR
Robert’s white claws were suddenly surrounded by an eerie black glow. He began slashing at the mystic barrier until it shattered!

ROBERT (growling)
Die, you inhuman monster!

NARRATOR
Robert lunged at his father and slashed at his stomach, inflicting a deep wound and causing a geyser of bright red blood to erupt from him.

LORIN DAR (angry)
You ungrateful cur! Feel my power!

[Insert lightning bolt sound effect three times.]

NARRATOR
The lightning bolts caused Robert to cry out in pain and fall to his knees.

MEGHAN (shouting)
Big brother!
NARRATOR
Meghan leapt forward and tackled her father. Prying open his mouth with her claws, she opened her own. A black beam of energy sprang forth and began draining her father’s life force and transferring it into her.

[Insert death drain sound effect.]

Her eyes glowed bright red as the process occurred. Lorin Dar struggled to free himself, but Meghan’s increased body mass kept him pinned to the ground.

LORIN DAR (yelling)
Damn you, release me at once! Uh…..(grows fainter and fades out)

NARRATOR
A few minutes later, Lorin Dar breathed his last and died.
Meghan turned to her brother, who seemed to have fully recovered from his wounds.
ROBERT
It appears that our new forms heal rapidly, but I feel so tired and hungry now.

MEGHAN
Here, big brother, let me help you! Open your mouth.

NARRATOR
Robert did as his sister instructed him. She opened her mouth as well and this time the black beam of energy transferred some of her newly acquired life energy to her brother.

[Insert death drain sound effect.]

ROBERT
Ah, I feel so much better now!

MEGHAN
What are we to do now, big brother? Both mother and father are dead and Obsidian Order is bound to hunt us down…

ROBERT
We will have to start over again somewhere else. We will have to learn to stay in the shadows and hunt our prey at night for sustenance. During the day, we will be able to blend into society for short periods of time.
NARRATOR
Robert suddenly shapeshifted back into his original form. Meghan followed suit.

MEGHAN
How long will we able to retain our original forms, big brother?

ROBERT
I’m not sure yet, little sister, but I suspect no more than a couple of hours per day. Now we must choose new names for ourselves. Do you have a particular preference, dear sister?

MEGHAN
Vastra sounds like a good name for me. …And what would you like to be called, big brother?”

ROBERT
I wish to be called Aberon. He was the great storyweaver whose works gave us some insight into the time before the Great Cataclysm. Sadly, it now appears I will be unable to pursue my dream and follow in his footsteps due to our altered forms.

NARRATOR
Meghan gave her big brother a hug.

MEGHAN
Cheer up, big brother! One day we will both be rich and powerful and find a way to cure ourselves of this affliction which father has cursed us with.

ROBERT
I hope you are right, dear sister. Now let us depart from this wretched place quickly before someone discovers us!

MEGHAN
Yes, big brother!

NARRATOR
Aberon and Vastra departed the shard fall.

SCENE IV

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
I was fortunate enough to run into a healer named Christopher Nightshadow on Mount Hellath who was able to show me where to find a hecamun plant rather quickly. After thanking the kind man for his help, I returned to the shard fall a couple of hours after these events transpired and witnessed this gruesome sight. Using my spirit talking ability, I spoke to the spirits of both Lorin Dar and his wife, Constance, and learned what had occurred. Later, I used my ability to speak with animals on the kitten, Turlow, to learn the rest of the story. I was utterly repulsed by what my master had become and did not wish to share his fate.
On that day, I decided to leave the Obsidian Order. I changed my name to Torin Kell, and began studying other forms of magic to combat those whom I once served. I formed a resistance movement composed of former Obsidian mages as well as other mages and soldiers who I managed to recruit to our cause. I formed the New Britannia Theater Troupe as a means to secretly monitor the activities of the Obsidians as well as lift the spirits of the oppressed masses.
I hope that The Resistance will be instrumental in bringing down the mighty Obsidian Empire someday. Now that I have little time left in this world, I have committed all of my experiences down to paper, in hopes that future generations do not repeat the same mistakes we once made. It will be up to my female apprentice, Tanith Ren, and the other members of The Council to carry on my work. So ends the tale of Amin Zul…

NARRATOR
An elderly Amin Zul sat up in his bed.

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
Tiberius, did you get all that?

VASH NORRELL (somber)
Yes, Master Zul. You know that you are the only one who refers to me by my given name. Everyone else refers to me by my middle name.

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice, chuckling)
I don’t know why you prefer that. Tiberius is a fine name and nothing to be ashamed of…

VASH NORRELL (hesitant)
I have my reasons, master…

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
Ah well, I hope you reconsider someday. You know, Vash, you really should try and get out more. I understand that you are rather fond of your fellow mage, Talia Sacor.

VASH NORRELL (embarrassed)
Where did you hear that, master? Well, it is true that I have admired Talia for a long time now, but we are so different in personality. She is a fiery redhead who seems to prefer brawny warrior types. I doubt that she would be interested in a mild mannered, bookish fellow such as myself…

AMIN ZUL
Although she has several possible suitors, I suspect that she is fond of you as well, my young man. You should tell how you feel before she is snapped by another lucky fellow.

VASH NORRELL (hesitant)
I don’t know, master…

AMIN ZUL
Give it some thought, Vash. I think you two would make a nice couple. There is so much more to life than just books…

VASH NORRELL
I will consider your sage advice, master.

NARRATOR
Vash Norrell closed the journal and handed it to Amin Zul.

VASH NORRELL
Master, it has been a honor to serve as your personal scribe these past ten years.

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
The pleasure has been mine, Vash. You are a bright, young fellow, so I have decided (with the Council’s blessing), to entrust you with an important responsibility. Please open the drawer to the right of my bed.
[Drawer opens.]

NARRATOR
Inside the drawer was an ornate maple wood box. Vash removed the box and opened it as his master instructed him to. Inside of the box were a golden quill and a gold inkwell.

VASH NORRELL (confused)
Master, I do not understand…

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
It is important that the activities of The Resistance be documented so that future generations will know what we fought for. I hereby appoint you to the position of historian.

VASH NORRELL (grateful)
Master, I do not know what to say….Thank you for entrusting me with this important responsibility. I will not fail you…

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
Of that, I am certain. Has Tanith’s raiding party returned yet?

VASH NORRELL
Yes, a short while ago.

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
Summon forth the members of The Council and Tanith as well. This is something I need to discuss with them before I depart this mortal realm.

VASH NORRELL
Yes, Master Zul.

(Insert “By Shattered Moonlight”, by Holt Ironfell ft Sharm )

NARRATOR
Vash Norrell turned and left the room.
As soon as Vash departed, a familiar figure suddenly appeared in a puff of white smoke.

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
Ah, old friend, I was wondering if I would see you again before I died.

NYSTAL TIMELORD
I promised you long ago I would be here with you at the end. I will miss our long talks, Amin.

AMIN ZUL ( elderly voice)
As will I, Nystal.

NYSTAL TIMELORD
I must say that you chose your personal scribe well, Amin. That young man, Tiberius, has a bright future ahead of him. Don’t worry, I will work to ensure that he and Talia end up together. One day, one of their grandsons, Theodric, will pay a pivotal role in the history of New Britannia.

AMIN ZUL (cheerful)
I am glad to hear that, Nystal. I knew from the first time I met him that there was something special about him…

NARRATOR
Nystal’s holographic wife, Chariya, suddenly materialized.

CHARIYA
Amin, you have been a good friend to the both of us. I will miss you too.
AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
Thank you, Chariya. I hope that one day Nystal is able to create you a new body and that the two of you have many children.

CHARIYA (embarrassed)
Many children? I don’t know about that…

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
Nystal, it is important not to get so wrapped up in one’s work and forget about the other things in life. I spent all of these years establishing The Resistance and deeply regret that I never married or had the ability to father children. That is why my adopted daughter Tanith is so precious to me.

NYSTAL TIMELORD
I understand, Amin. I will try to be a better husband and perhaps a father someday.

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
I’m glad to hear that. Now Nystal, there is something I need you to do for me.

NARRATOR
Amiz Zul handed his journal to Nystal.

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
I entrust my personal journal to you for safekeeping. You will know who to give it to when the time comes.

NYSTAL TIMELORD
I understand. Is there anything else you need me to do?

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
Yes. It is vital that the New Britannia Theater Troupe continue its mission to watch over New Britannia. It now falls to you to recruit new members to carry on that work.

NYSTAL TIMELORD
I will do as you ask. May you find peace and happiness in your ascension to a higher plane of existence. Farewell, old friend!

NARRATOR
Nystal and holographic Chariya vanished in a puff of white smoke.

SCENE V

ARN KALOR
So, Tanith, how did the raid on the Obsidian supply caravan go?

TANITH REN
It went about as expected. The guards put up a lot of resistance, but we were able to confiscate most of their food and supplies and get it to the refugees in the safe zone. We suffered higher than expected losses, including Cam Baresh…

NARRATOR
Arn noticed the sad look in Tanith’s eyes as her voice trailed off.

ARN KALOR
I’m so sorry, Tanith I know you two were…very close.

TANITH REN
Thank you, Arn. Cam and I studied together under Master Amin Zul and were the best of friends. Before we set out on this mission, he said there was something he wanted to discuss with me over dinner tonight. Do you have any idea what he was talking about?

ARN KALOR (apologetically)
I’m afraid so, Tanith… You know how Cam tends to misplace things, so he asked me to hold onto this for him until he returned from the mission. I think he would still want you to have it…

NARRATOR
Arn reached into his belt pouch and pulled out a small box. Tanish opened it and saw a silver diamond engagement ring inside.

TANITH REN (crying softly)
Oh, Cam…

NARRATOR
Tanith closed the box and placed it in her belt pouch.

ARN KALOR
If I may ask, Tanith, how did he meet his end?

TANITH REN
Lupo and I were pinned down by enemy fire behind one of the supply wagons. We had stayed behind with Cam to buy time for the rest of the team to escape with the supplies. As Obsidian reinforcements arrived, Cam created a diversion so that Lupo and I could make our way to the river. He was knocked unconscious by a couple of dark energy bolts fired by two Obsidian mages. The last I saw, they were dragging his unconscious form away.

ARN KALOR
So, he’s still alive?

TANITH REN

Yes, but he’s probably being tortured right now for information. When they are done with him, Cam will be taken to one of their secret reclamation centers and used as a test subject for their transformation spells.

ARN KALOR

What a horrible fate…

VASH NORELL
Tanith, come quickly! Master Zul is calling for you! He doesn’t have much time left!

(Insert “Days of Old” by Ome The Bard)

NARRATOR

Tanith quickly wiped away her tears and followed Vash upstairs to Master Amin Zul’s bedroom.

She was quite surprised to find the members of The Council gathered around his bed. Tanith was astonished to see how pale and frail her mentor now looked, nothing at all like the handsome, vibrant young mage who rescued that lonely and scared ten year old girl from that wretched orphanage thirty years ago. Amin had raised her as if she were his daughter, for he had been unable to have any biological children of his own due to the forced castration he had endured at the hands of his late mentor, Lorin Dar.

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
Tanith, dear, come closer.

TANITH REN
Yes, father.

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)

I don’t have much time left, but before I depart this mortal realm, this is something I must do. I hereby nominate Tanith Ren to the position of Council Leader.

COUNCILOR KOMAR (protesting)

But, Master Zul, Tanith is too young to assume such an important role! She’s not even a member of The Council!”

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice, chiding)

Previous Council membership is not a prerequisite for the job! Surely you do not deny her skill with the mystic arts?

COUNCILOR DRAVEN

Of course not! You have trained her well, Master Zul, and she is certainly one of our most powerful mages. However, Tanith is young and lacks the wisdom and experience to lead which comes with age!

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice, chuckling)
A role for which you might better suited for? Very well then, I will put this to a vote. Does anyone wish to nominate another candidate?

COUNCILOR KOMAR
I nominate Councilor Draven. He is the most experienced member of the Council and has done an outstanding job managing our finances these past fifteen years.

COUNCILOR DRAVEN
Thank you for your kind words, Councilor Komar. I merely seek to serve The Resistance in any way I can.

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
All those in favor of Tanith, raise your hands!

NARRATOR
Three of the Council members raised their hands.

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
All those in favor of Councilor Draven, please your hands!

NARRATOR
The other three Council members raised their hands.

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice)
A tie? That is most interesting. As you know, only in the case there is a tie does the Council Leader get to cast a vote. Congratulations, my dear, you will lead The Council into the future…

TANITH REN (stammering)
Father, I am not sure that I am worthy of the trust which you placed in me.

AMIN ZUL (elderly voice, chuckling)
Nonsense, my child! You may not realize it, but I have been training you your entire life to take over for me. You are ready!

Now my work is done and I may finally rest.

NARRATOR
Amin Zul closed his eyes and his breathing grew shallow. Soon he was gone. The great mage Amin Zul had passed beyond the veil.

SCENE VI

NARRATOR
In the present, Clarissa closes the massive tome and lugs it over to Thomas, who puts it back in the safe. Several hours have passed, and it is now dark outside.

THOMAS
I hope you found the journal to be of some use with your writing assignment.

CLARISSA
Yes, very much so! Thank you, Thomas!

THOMAS (stammering)
Clarissa, I don’t know if anyone has asked you to the Summer Festival Dance next week, but I would be most honored if you would be my date…

CLARISSA
I would be delighted to be your date, Thomas! We will talk more about the details tomorrow, but now I must hurry home for dinner.

NARRATOR
Clarissa gives Thomas a quick peck on the cheek as she hurries out the door.
Thomas sighs. He is on cloud nine!

(Insert “Ashes and Dust” by Holt Ironfell)
A few minutes later, Thomas goes to lock the front door when he suddenly hears some low growling and heavy breathing directly behind him.

ROBERT (growling)
You never should have given her that journal, boy!

NARRATOR
Thomas turns around and is startled to see…
THOMAS (stammering)
You’re some sort of albino werewolf, as depicted in the tale!”

ROBERT (growling)
Does this form frighten you boy? Perhaps this form will put you more at ease.

NARRATOR
The albino creature starts to shimmer and transforms into…

THOMAS (shocked)
You’re… Count Aberon, the Oracle’s ambassador to the outer provinces!

ROBERT
Indeed I am. I’ve managed to locate and destroy the other two copies so that no one learns of our existence. You are the last loose end I need to take care of…
NARRATOR
Count Aberon grabs Thomas by the neck and pulls him in really close.
Thomas stares into Aberon’s eyes and finds himself compelled to open his mouth. Aberon opens his mouth and a black beam of energy springs forth and enters Thomas’ mouth.
[Insert death drain sound effect.]
The last thing Thomas thinks to himself before he dies is how much he wished he had told Clarissa that he loved her…
Count Aberon lets go of Thomas’ lifeless form and it falls to the ground like a sack of potatoes.

[Door opens.]
ROBERT
Did you take care of the girl?

MEGHAN (gleeful)
Yes, big brother. Her life force was most delicious, but now I have a desire for some red meat.

ROBERT
Don’t worry, little sister, I will prepare you a fine feast tonight with this boy here as the main course. I have a fine Merlot in my wine cellar which will perfectly compliment him.

MEGHAN (licking her lips in anticipation)
Umm…I look forward to it. You are such a fine chef, dear brother.

ROBERT
Thank you, little sister. I….ARGH!

NARRATOR
Count Aberon doubles over in pain as he begins shifting back and forth between his human form and his monster form.

ROBERT (gasping)
Need elixir….

NARRATOR
Lady Vastra quickly removes a vial from her belt pouch and poured the golden elixir down her brother’s throat. Count Aberon’s condition stabilizes and he is able to retain his human form.

ROBERT
Thank you, dear sister. This elixir which the Oracle supplies us allows us to retain more control over our transformations but failure to consume it on a daily basis has severe side effects…

MEGHAN
No doubt formulated that way to ensure our loyalty and obedience. I am very close to perfecting an antidote which will free us of our dependence on the elixir. I have hit a minor snag in my research, but I learned from a local vendor that there is a highly skilled mage who may be able to help me overcome it.

ROBERT
Ah, Vastra, you were always the bright one. What is this mage’s name and where can we find him?

MEGHAN
His name is Lord Baldrith and he is said to dwell south of here in the village of Greystone.

ROBERT
Hmm….our targets, Gabriel Nightshadow and Nystal TimeLord, were seen headed in that direction as well. Perhaps we will run into them on the South Valeway. But first, there is the matter of tonight’s dinner…

NARRATOR
Count Aberon slings Thomas’ corpse over his back.

ROBERT
Now let us be off before some passerby notices us. We will begin our search for Gabriel Nightshadow and Nystal TimeLord tomorrow morning.

MEGHAN
Yes, big brother.

[Door opens and then slams shut.]

[ROBERT laughs evilly.]

And
Cordelayne Valkaris as the narrator

The incessantly bickering residents of Greystone had one thing on which they could all agree. They were in trouble. Serious trouble. Finding the situation becoming more dire by the day, the mayor called a town meeting. When the small population had assembled, the mayor stood up, puffed out his chest, and commenced.
“Thank you for coming everyone. As you know our situation is desperate. This past winter has been the coldest and most severe in living memory. Caravans are often unable to traverse the snowy passes, and those that do get through are as often as not waylaid by bandits. The crops have failed again and we have no other source of income.”
Derek, a local farmworker, looked up and muttered “I suspect we’re all doomed!”
Christine, the lively, vivacious manager of the general store, glared at him and said “Shut up Derek. Try being positive for once in your life!”
Derek just made a face at Christine and replied “You’re right. I’m positive we’re all doomed!”
Waving at them both to be silent, the mayor said “Quiet down you two. I’m opening the floor to suggestions. How can we make money to see us through this bad patch?”
Sharon, the voluptuous barmaid, waved her hand in the air. “The tavern attracts a steady stream of thirsty travellers. Most like to pop in for a quick ale. Maybe we could sell stuff to them?”
Derek, in a flat monotone, replied “That’s great Sharon, only we have nothing to sell. If we had any assets we wouldn’t be in this mess. Besides, nobody wants to buy stuff they then have to lug around on their journey. We need to get travellers to willingly part with lots of money for something they can easily carry.”
Refusing to be put off, Christine continued “That’s true, but what if we sold them, say, a treasure map for a large sum? All we have to do is convince them that it’s genuine.”
With a scornful laugh Derek retorted “Are you kidding Christine? No one’s going to fall for the old Fake Treasure Map scam!”
Ben, who was generally accepted as the oldest and wisest in the village, had been listening to this exchange. He nodded, rubbed his chin and said “Hmm. Obviously a simple treasure map isn’t going to work, but I think I have an idea. One that requires the whole village to work together.”
On hearing this, the mayor brightened considerably. “Excellent!” he said. “I propose we discuss
it further at the tavern this evening. I know I could use a drink or two…”

Later that evening, most of the villagers were seated at tables in the tavern. A buzz of conversation was suddenly interrupted when the door swung open and a traveller walked in. He headed straight for the bar and sat down with a flourish.
“Welcome traveller, what’ll it be?” enquired the bartender. “We have the finest ale south of Owl’s Head. Or, if you prefer, for a little extra I can offer our own special mead we make to a local recipe.”
With an expansive smile the traveller replied “I’ll have the mead, thanks. I’m in a spending mood. I fetched a lot more than I expected from selling some crystals I found in a cave, and I feel like celebrating.”
The traveller paid for the mead, leaving a generous tip, and headed for the one remaining empty table. While his back was turned the barman gave a barely perceptible wink in the direction of the rear door. Within a minute there was the sound of something heavy being dragged, and Ben appeared, out of breath and panting heavily.
“I found it! I found it!!” he cried.
The bartender raised a quizzical eyebrow and replied “Calm down Ben, what did you find?”
“The legendary aurum plant! We all thought it was extinct, but I found some growing in a spider infested cave!”
The barman’s jaw dropped. “You went into a spider infested cave? I knew you were reckless, Ben, but what on earth possessed you to do that?”
Ben was almost incoherent with excitement “I went in to rescue my dog. Anyhow, I managed to kill all the spiders, but when I went to grab Digger I found he had turned into solid gold! Then I noticed the aurum berries, some of which he had obviously eaten. Stupid dog eats everything!”
At this the barman’s eyebrows almost reached his hairline. “You are the most sober, reliable person I know, Ben. But that story is hard to swallow. Do you have any proof?”
Ben immediately reached into the sack he had been dragging and retrieved a golden dog, placing it on the bar. “Of course – look at this!”
The barman looked as if he was going to faint. “Great Obsidian torments! That’s Digger all right. I’d recognise that dopey expression anywhere. Wow. So, what are you going to do with the berries?”
Stunned back to reality, Ben said “Hmm. That’s a good question.”
Christine, ever watchful for a good opportunity, called out “Pretty much the whole village is here right now, so how about you auction them?”
Ben shook his head for a moment as if absorbing this idea, and said “Great idea, Christine. What am I offered for the remaining 27 aurum berries? Minimum bid increment 1000 gold, please.”
Derek was first up: “I’ll give you 2000 gold for them. That’s all I’ve got.”
Christine replied instantly “Ha! Loser. I’ll give you 3000!”
Sharon waved her hand vigorously and said “4000!”
Derek glared briefly and shouted “5000!”
Christine gave Derek a look that could kill, and said “You lying scoundrel! That’s me out.”
Sharon, grinning, said “Oh, so you want to play, do you Derek? 6000!”
Derek responded “7000!…………….
What, cat got your tongue, Sharon?”
Sharon grimaced and snapped “8000, you horrible little weasel!”
The barman slammed his hand on the counter and called out “Finished squabbling, children? 9000! Beat that!”
The traveller, who had been watching this exchange as his mouth gradually opened wide in astonishment, suddenly spoke up. “This is fascinating and all, but I’m in a hurry, and I need those berries. Twenty thousand gold!”
A stunned silence ensued, broken after a minute or so by Ben, who bowed to the traveller and said “Sold to the gentleman of impressive means who can nevertheless spot a real bargain when he sees it.”
The traveller completed the sale with almost indecent haste, handing over an impressive sack of gold in exchange for the handful of berries, and left to spread the word of his good fortune. As soon as he was out of earshot the tavern erupted in laughter.
Wiping the tears from his eyes, Ben said “That was great, everyone. You all played your parts brilliantly. Equal shares for everyone! And Sharon, thank you for the loan of the statue you made of your late dog Snuffles. It’s a pity we didn’t have quite enough gold paint to finish the job. He would have had quite a surprise if he looked under the tail and saw the brown spot.”
Christine, as ever, had the last word “Can I play Sharon’s role next time? I feel like I need to tackle something a little meatier…”

The Diary of Eva Grace, Vol III – by enderandrew – narrated by Lady Adnor

Hello everyone, this is Lady Adnor, and I am pleased to bring you the continuing story of Eva Grace, written by enderandrew.
The Diary of Eva Grace – Vol III
Told by Eva Grace

I thought death would be the end of me. I thought wrong.

My spirit began to rise from my body. I kept looking at Thomas, but he wasn’t looking at me. He was looking into the eyes of my dead body below as I kept rising. But then he faded away into a ball of light. The world grew dark, but the rest did not fade away. At first I was petrified (at least as much as a spirit could be). I could not move, nor find the words to shout. But as it became clear I had not simply dissipated into nothingness, I wanted to fight back. I wanted a way home to end this nightmare.

Why had Thomas called for Dreyfus? Was there something he could do to bring me back? To save me? Now I bolted through the window into the night as a ghost. I looked to find my killer, but all I saw were the occasional balls of light. I could not make out any people. I saw two move towards the tavern. Were they mere guards, or was Dreyfus among them?

I panicked and circled around further. I stumbled upon the graveyard by the moon tower and the symbology terrified me. I scrambled some more and I came across what looked like a chapel. These did not seem like religious folk that I could tell, a few superstitious perhaps. But there in front of me was a symbol that did call out to me, an ankh. At least I knew it to be an ankh. What was it here? What did it mean in this world? I wasn’t sure if it meant the end and that final dissipation into nothingness, but it felt right and I was drawn in.

And then suddenly I was back in bed. But this wasn’t another nightmare I was awaking from. I could feel the pain in my chest, and weakness through my whole body. There was no hole where the dagger had been, but Thomas and Dreyfus were there beside me. Dreyfus had some sort of healing kit he had brought into the room, but now they both stared in shock as I returned from the dead.

I did not know then what I know now. My soul is not of this world, and the world will not accept it. Though I may die here, it will not be a final death. If there is an afterlife in New Britannia, it will not have me. I was a freak. I ran from the room and the town further still. I kept running for weeks, relying on the kindness of travelers and small farms to keep me for a night at a time as I traveled the land. I needed to escape anyone who had heard of me and what had happened.

Some of the stories traveled as well. Some said perhaps the “woman who lived” was really undead, the work of a necromancer to raise the dead. They say Jaged was caught and disappeared in The Clink, never to be seen again. For a while I feared my own visage and what it might represent. I understood a bit how he feared me as well.

But as I traveled to the mainland, other stories followed as well that weren’t about me. They told of other outlanders pouring through in great numbers. Some of them died as well to wolves or bandits or fearful blades like I had. They too rose from the dead and I realized my condition wasn’t unique.

What brought us here, and kept us even through death? I never believed in destiny myself or any type of prophecy. I had no desire to play any part in it. I just wanted a new home where I wasn’t a pariah. I had become anathema to myself. I needed a place to stop and gather my thoughts, to rediscover who I was now in this world. Maybe then I could someday find a new way home.

That was when I found it. It was a small village, a holdfast they say, named Rift’s End. I hoped that wasn’t the case for me. I did not want this to be the end of my journey when home seemed so far away. But I knew I couldn’t run forever.

The Diary of Eva Grace, Vol II – by enderandrew – narrated by Lady Adnor

Hello everyone, this is Lady Adnor, and I am pleased to bring you the continuation of the Diary of Eva Grace, written by enderandrew.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
The Diary of Eva Grace – Vol II
Told by Eva Grace

He found me in the tavern, where I spent most of my free time. I was a little drunk and I didn’t expect hostility. Some treated me with a little trepidation or concern, but this was a town of good people. I was still a stranger in a strange land, but more and more this town felt like home every day. I was beginning to suspect I would miss it when I left. I promised I would write and Thomas was even teaching me how to do that here.

When he appeared behind me and grabbed my shoulder, my quill dragged across the page.

“Hey, watch it! I only have so much parchment,” I called out as I turned to face my attacker.

He had no qualms about hitting a woman as he shoved me hard into the bar. Thomas moved quickly around the bar to intervene.

“You’re going to have to leave Jaged. I won’t have any of that here.” Thomas did not yell, but his stern voice was quite clear. He would have no violence in his establishment.

“Don’t you see that she endangers us all? We’re only a couple years away from the prophecy. Do you not know that she is an outlander? And what if the calendars are off? What if the prophecy is now?” He appealed to the crowd. I could sense their fear. But I wasn’t sure if they feared him or me.

“Lord Enmar is aware of this superstition. She is not the only outlander in Novia. It is not yet the year of prophecy, nor do I put stock in such nonsense. He wisely agreed that we will judge individuals by their actions. She’s been trying to help in her time here.”

“Sadly, not very well I must admit,” I muttered. Thomas didn’t seem to approve of my interjection.

“She means well, and that is the point. She may not have been born here, but she is here now and she is a guest in my tavern. I will not tolerate anyone laying a hand on her again. If it happens again, you will deal with me and then you’ll deal with the guard.”

Perhaps Jaged anticipated the crowd would immediately side with him and he could have mob justice. As he surveyed the room and none jumped to his cause, he stormed out unsatisfied. I knew the matter was not yet resolved. I was still shaken up. Thomas insisted I drink tea instead of ale and crawl into bed so that I would awaken to a fresh day.

If only that were the case. The tea did help calm my nerves but I had trouble sleeping that night. Nightmares kept creeping in and I was suddenly terrified of this new world I found myself in. I wondered if I would ever find a way home. Then suddenly I awoke from one nightmare only to find myself in another.

Jaged stood over my bed. He shoved a pillow over my face to smother my scream as he whispered “I will not let you burn this world”. I thought he meant to suffocate me and then he plunged a dagger into my heart. It was a shocking bolt of pain unlike any I had ever felt. I screamed out dying breaths that the pillow could not hide. Thomas awoke and ran to my room, seeing Jaged climb out the window and drop to the street below. I remember the last memory before my death was Thomas calling desperately for the guards to fetch Dreyfus and turning to look into my lifeless eyes.

The Exodus – by Themo Lock – narrated by Asclepius

Hello everyone, this is Asclepius, with a wonderful story from Themo Lock, entitled
The Exodus
(historical account from the Lockbrier archives, as recorded by Jerison the bard)
Background music “Lowland Invasion” by Smartsound

Therion Lock sat on his heels at the mouth of the cave system and stared up at a sky in turmoil, what should have been blue skies instead was smoke and fire. In the distance an enormous, jet black meteor sheathed in flame, parted the clouds and plummeted to the ground with a tremendous boom sending up plumes of strange purple dust high into the air. Shardfall, fragments of a shattered moon raining down on the land and laying waste to civilisation. He shifted his attention to the smoking ruins of Paxlair and clenched his fists in frustration and anger, the twin towers had been reduced to rubble and many of the cities homes still smouldered and smoked a sight that brought tears to his eyes. But it was not the deadly hail of stone that was the cause of this destruction; the bane of Paxlair travelled on leathery wings and had a name of her own… Adelind. The dragon had been driven from her lair by the shardfall several weeks previous and she now sought shelter in the cave system on the city outskirts. For many months the citizens of Paxlair had worked to shape these caves into a new home at Governor Winfield’s behest, the project was to be a haven from the chaos and a bunker in which to weather the shardfall. Deep within the underground system was a natural spring, stores of food and other supplies as well as an established mushroom farm. The senior mages of the city had also been experimenting with an unstable rift at the back of the cave as a possible last ditch escape route should worst case scenarios come to pass. Losing the caves to the dragon would surely seal the fate of the city’s population and all now worked tirelessly to secure the area.

Three times the beast had assaulted the city, each time driven off by Nanoc and the militia but at the cost of many lives. Therion and his family were masons and had been tasked with overseeing the construction, an overwhelming task hindered by tremors and darkness. Construction of the subterranean housing was now halted as focus shifted to the caves entrance, wooden framework was in place and stone recovered from the fallen towers was stockpiled nearby ready to be set in place. Governor Winfield now ushered the last of the Paxlair citizens into the cave system, a long procession of soot-covered refugees carrying the remains of their possessions while Nanoc and the militia worked to repair a damaged ballista and erect earthworks. Therion’s sons were were off with the foresters gathering timber and he nervously glanced at the distant tree-line before picking up his tools and returning to work. The wide cave-mouth needed to be closed off to a narrower, more defensible size and it was going to require a lot of stone to withstand the onslaught of a dragon.

“Dragonsign!” the shout rang out from a nearby watchtower and raised the hairs on the back of Therion’s neck, he spun on his heel and cried out to see plumes of fire descending from the skies into the streets of the emptying city. The militia took up position in front of the cave, readying their arrows and spells while Nanoc screamed instructions at a terrified engineer. Therion sought cover behind the piles of cut stone and fumbled to string his bow with trembling hands, he had not fired an arrow for over a decade. A deafening roar from above and the dragon came into view, wings folded back, maw open in a hideous sneer, the beast dove from the sky directly at the militia. “Loose loose loose!” screamed Nanoc as the militia launched a barrage of spells and missiles into the air, very few found their mark. Undaunted, Adelind unfolded her wings and slowed her descent, coming to ground directly in front of the militia. Molten saliva dribbled from her mouth as she inhaled deeply, a look of pure rancour in her eyes. With a loud twang the engineer fired his ballista with surprising accuracy, the oversized arrow piercing the dragon’s right shoulder and throwing her off balance. The beasts head flung to the side, spewing flame across the hillside as she whipped her tail at the ballista shattering the engine into splinters and sending Nanoc and the engineer tumbling back into the cave. The militia pushed the assault, leaping over the earthworks and bearing down on the beast with pole-arms and blades under cover of another barrage of arcane lightning and arrows. With horror Therion watched as the dragon regained her footing and charged, flinging the militia aside and disappearing into the cave. Screams echoed from within and the sound of dragonfire as those remaining outside fell to their knees in defeat, all was lost. Broken and bloodied, the engineer hobbled into view with a large yellow flask in hand “This prize will be her last!” he screamed, smashing the flask into the cave wall. The explosion knocked Therion to the ground, a stone splinter embedded into his forearm and ears ringing. Dazed, he looked around in dismay… the militia were all dead or badly injured, the city was once more in flames and the cave system was sealed. The governor and citizens could not have survived; there was no safe haven from shardfall. Paxlair had fallen.

The Diary of Eva Grace, Vol 1 – by enderandrew – narrated by Lady Adnor

Hello everyone, this is Lady Adnor, and I’m pleased to bring you a wonderfully written piece by enderandrew, titled
The Diary of Eva Grace – Vol I
Told by Eva Grace

I didn’t write these things as they happened. I didn’t even know how to write then in rune, or use parchment and quill. Nor did I have time to sit and collect my thoughts at the time, but it seems I have all the time in the world now. But my story is true as well as I remember it.

They say I was one of the first to cross over in ages. The lunar rifts had been dormant for some time. No one had seen a new outlander in years. And how was I supposed to know the timing was bad and that there was some prophecy forthcoming?

I don’t remember precisely what happened or how I ended up here, save for that first sight of etheric energy of a moon tower, and the blue glow of the lunar rift behind me. I feared I was mad or trapped in some lucid dream. Years later I’m left wondering if my life before was the dream. I had a lover I left behind, but now I don’t fully remember his face. I only remember that I once remembered it. He is like the sun that has already slipped past the horizon. I can still see the glowing outline of what once was. Would he remember me? Did his life move on without me?

To say I was confused is a gross understatement. The town guard surrounded me. As Nicolas the guard questioned me, I could only offer questions myself in response. Though he felt it impossible, he worked out that I was an outlander, an off-worlder. It still seems so impossible that I am on another planet until I look at the moonlit sky and see the alien horror and wonder of Daedalus staring down at me.

I was taken before Lord Enmar, who had heard tales of outlanders before, although they were much fewer in number when I arrived. He charged Captain Dreyfus with finding me work so I would not be a debtor or a burden on the town.

My life of relative comfort on Earth hadn’t prepared me for a day of truly honest labor here. I assisted different people in town with their tasks hoping to find one I was good at, where I could apprentice and earn my keep. I’m ashamed to admit I wasn’t good at any of them. I was a writer back home and I simply didn’t know any other trade. I couldn’t even pass as a bard here as no one would understand my stories nor would they have any frame of reference.

At first I wondered if I could use my knowledge from Earth to further technology here, perhaps become rich or help find a way home. But even my basic knowledge of electronics and physics proved worthless here. After stumbling across a magnetic rock, I could produce nothing by rotating it around thin copper wire quickly. And yet this world has its own forces and energies unlike nothing I had seen at home. There were radios supposedly powered by the moon and etheric energies.

I sat in the tavern, laying out my problems and ordered a cocktail. Thomas was confused. He had mead, wine, ales and lagers. But no one here knew much about mixing juices and distilled alcohol. It was literally a foreign concept to them. I realized that perhaps the only thing I had to offer this world was the ability to mix and pour drinks they had never tried.

Thomas was a good barkeep in his own right. I had decided on my new fate, that I would save some coin and find a town that needed my services tending bar and pouring drinks. I knew I wouldn’t stay in Owl’s Head. I just hadn’t realized how soon I would be leaving.

Rise of the Ravagers Chapter 6 – by Lendrick – narrated by Asclepius

CHAPTER SIX BOOK OF THE RAVAGERS City of Brittany, 1 week ago….. “Again” Rannick exclaimed in frustration. “You will keep doing this, again and again if need be until you get it right” Slyphania was exhausted. Every fibre in her being down to the core ached with a weariness that defied belief. All she wanted to do was collapse and perhaps sleep for a week. “Again!” Rannick spat. Slyphania straightened from her crouching position and stretched. Rubbing her tired eyes, she took several deep breaths and a determined “grunt”, before re-focussing on the open tome. Rannick described the tome as an ancient text, from well before the Cataclysm and was sought after by his following, The Obsidian Order Cult. The cult dedicated itself to the preservation and resurrection of the “Ravagers”, a supreme undead spectral force that had mastered dark Chaos energy. Their goal was to be brought into this plane of existence and cover the whole world in their darkness. The Obsidian Order Cult existed to see that it was brought to fruition. The Book that thrust itself upon her those many weeks ago, was the fabled “Toemisa Ex Eravagerian”, or roughly translated by Rannick as “The Book of the Ravagers”. Re-focussing her eyes on the incantation, Slyphania started again. ______________ Later that night, finally rid of Rannick, Slyphania collapsed on her inn’s bed, so tired she could no longer stand, her legs were cramping up and would not support her frail elven weight. Lying there on the bed, her thoughts were filled darkly of the book, the incantations and spell she was being forced to memorise. Even though she was as tired as she was, sleep would not come. Slyphania had always had an affinity for the arcane arts, and had always dreamed of learning what it was like to be an “all powerful” sorceress. However, she did not picture it like this. Endless study, an obsession to strive to remember it all. So great was the feeling of need that she would forget to eat and drink, and as a result, had become weaker and sallow. Tossing and turning, the sweet embrace of slumber would still not come. Attempting a different tack to finally get a decent night’s sleep, Slyphania turned her mind towards her peculiar new friend, what was his name again, Glyph? Glyz? Glyn? Yeah, Glyn sounded familiar, ‘Glyn-drel?” That was it! He seemed nice, and kind and perhaps, a friend? Slyphania couldn’t remember too much past the falling in the cave and finding the book. The book. Always her mind comes back to the Book. As nice as the feelings for this “Glyn-drel” were, Slyphania pushed them aside. She did not have time for friends or family. She had to dedicate and devote her time to her studies. Of the Book. Tossing again, Slyphania peered over to where the book lay on her inn’s dining room table. Sleep was not about to take her, and staring at that book, the memories of blood, death and darkness came unbidden. But she didn’t remember them, not in her lifetime, then who’s? The book seemed to call to her, beckon her in within its runic pages, to learn and become strong and conquer. It was then that it dawned on Slyphania like the breaking of the sun. The book was a summoning ritual. That was why Rannick was so fanatically determined to have her learn the runes, he needed someone to perform the ritual, to summon the Ravager into this dimension. But why her? Why now? These were vitally important questions racing through her mind that needed to be addressed but she had to console herself that it wouldn’t be tonight. Still sleep eluded her, like a furtive chicken, forever out of reach. So, Slyphania thought, it all revolves around this book. It was certainly an elegant, auspicious tome, with gold filigree on the front cover and spine, re-enforced and each page was gold trimmed. Inside was pictures, the runic alphabet, some rudimentary spells and, the all-important Summoning ritual. As Slyphania stared at the book, she stated to feel lost and afraid. So far from home and dealing with unknown people and unknown forces beyond her imagining. The kept her attention more, and Slyphania thought she could hear whispering coming from the book, quiet, subtle and sibilant. Promising her things, immortality. Slyphania knew it was wrong, but couldn’t fight it. The book was too strong, possessed by an unknown entity, malevolent and evil. Rannick suggested earlier that there might even be the spirit of a Ravager inhabiting the book. Continuing to stare at the book, Slyphania felt as though she were on the precipice of a great, yawning chasm, teetering and the ground beneath her was crumbling, looking back she could see her friend, and it appeared as though he was in slow motion, mouth moving, no noise, silently screaming, reaching for her. Turning towards him, the ground continued to give way. Wanting to feel his embrace, her arm raised and arm outstretched, reaching for him. He was reaching for her, arm outstretched. Almost. Almost. Can’t move forward the ground giving way, hand outstretched, fingers almost touching. Almost. The ground collapsed. The distance between fingertips increased. Slyphania fell. Startled awake by a loud noise. What was that!?!? A knock came to the room door, loud and insistent. Slyphania slid off the bed and padded over to the door. Opening it, there stood Rannick. Dressed in a midnight black robe, for a moment, Slyphania gasped, taking him to be a Ravager itself. “We leave on the morn, we are to make our way to the Necropolis and gather some supplies” Slyphania had a sinking suspicion that when he said “Supplies”, he meant something else. “Ok, fine” she replied shortly, hoping to put an end to the conversation quickly and get back to bed. Without any further discussion, Rannick turned and was gone. Closing the door, Slyphania returned to bed and sat on the edge, picking up the book and staring down at it in her lap. Curiosity got the better of her and she opened it to a random page. At that moment, darkness exploded out of the book and engulfed her. Slyphania knew no more, and got the rest she needed, just not in the way she had expected. TO BE CONTINUED>

The Green Rogue Volume III
Told by Joorus the Scribe

Background music Android Dream, by Smartsound

Lord Zolaas’ platemail glove slammed hard into his wooden throne, cracking it ever so slightly. It was embarrassing to constantly replace and repair his throne, but he was an impassioned man and he couldn’t hold his rage inside. His lands were dwindling, as was his power. They shifted to other feudal lords in Norgard. He felt like he had so little left and now bandits sought to take that away as well.

“Do these bastards not realize what they’re doing? It isn’t just gold or items. What if our men aren’t properly armed or prepared to fight Kobold forces? What if their will is weakened? How many would die because of the greed of a few?”

Sir Greggor stepped forward, with his palm outstretched. He did not like seeing his Lord so distressed. “Peace, my Lord. I promise I will take care of this and with haste. I agree that the cost is more than gold, which is why I take this threat so seriously. The Green Rogue is more than a common criminal and he will be stopped. We cannot fight a war on two fronts, especially one against our own people. With your blessing, I intend to take a small risk.”

Lord Zolaas’ head picked up a bit. Risk had not worked out well for him in recent years, but he also grew more desperate. One risk seemed to just lead into the next. “I’m not sure I can trust my own judgement anymore. I would not take any risk of my own volition, but if you trust it is the right thing to do-”

“My liege, I would not presume to decide for you,” Sir Greggor interrupted.

“No, it is time; it is your time. As my time wanes, you should succeed me. If this risk pays off, the glory and credit will be yours and I will step down. Not only will the Green Rogue be no more, but the poor leadership that inspired such rebellion will be no more. I cannot step down so long as he breathes, lest we incite more rebels. But if you take his head, then you should also take my throne. Perhaps you can even regain some of the lands we lost to the other Lords of the realm. Now go, and do what you must. I fear if I am associated with your plan, I will mar it with my failure.”

Sir Greggor bowed and left. He did not understand the need for politics and why any Lord should concern themselves with how much land was in their name. Everyone ultimately served the Titan, their King Granus, and thusly the people of Norgard. But perhaps this was a good test if he was fit to be a Lord himself. The thought of this risk terrified him. He was willing to risk his own life in combat, but what of the lives of others? Could he command people to leave the front lines to concentrate fully on this bandit if it meant a forward outpost might be overrun by Kobolds?

He knew the people would more easily stomach what they knew. If men died in battle to Kobold blades, it in theory should only renew the war efforts. But so long as this Green Rogue stole from men, they would have no support. Courage meant more than the might of lifting a sword in the heat of battle. At times, it meant having the will to make the hard decision.

He signed his writs and sent them off with messengers. The few mages they had would work on distractions while most every available soldier was being pulled back to merchant routes. The trap was in place, and he would have the Green Rogue’s head by nightfall. Would it be the only head taken? He hoped those writs weren’t death warrants he just signed.

Rise of the Ravagers chapter 5 – by Lendrick – narrated by Asclepius

Hello everyone, this is Asclepius, with another chapter in the thrilling story by Lendrick; it is entitled

Rise of the Ravagers, Chapter Five.
Background music “Lowland Invasion”by Smartsound.

CHAPTER FIVE FIELDS OF THE DEAD Midmaer Fields south of Midras The skeleton Knight shambled towards Lendrick Dawnfire with a quickness that surprised him. Quickly raising his shield to fend off its initial blow which left Lendrick’s arm vibrating from the force, Lendrick ducked and spun, bringing Light fire, his gleaming enchanted sword in a searing arc, severing one of the dead knight’s legs off from the knee and causing it to topple. Dancing quickly out of reach, the skeletal knight made another futile swing of its rusted axe that glanced off Lendrick’s plate mail boot. Spinning around, Lendrick brought Light fire down at the neck join, between the half faced rusted helmet and top of its rusted chest plate, severing the head and causing the undead creature to move no more. They just kept coming! Lendrick had rallied his contingent of the Knights of Novia to journey into Midmaer as there were reports of a practicing cult in the old Sokoth ruins near Blackblade. Burdock’s Knights were dedicated and swore to root out darkness and evil no matter where it may crawl and hide. They didn’t expect this onslaught though of undead from the old battlefield. There was definitely some dark magic at work here. “It’s sure is getting hot as well, unnaturally so…” Lendrick thought out loud, perhaps some more dark magic. Glancing over to his old friend, Burdock, a Cleric of Gaia, to see how he was faring and had to suppress a smile to himself. Burdock was definitely in his element, his mace rising and falling in a mad fervour as he moved from undead to undead, bits of bone and flesh flying in all directions. A mace was certainly more effective at smashing undead than Lendrick’s long sword, however, Light fire was precious to him, and they almost had a special bond together, so while Lendrick may take out one skeletal Knight to Burdock’s five, Lendrick would not part with Light fire. Over his dead body! “How’s fare thee, old friend?” Lendrick yelled to Burdock, the other Knights of Novia swarming and dancing around, spells flashing and undead dying. Again. “I have never been happier my friend! This is what I live for! We will smash all these hell spawns and then take the Castle!” Burdock bellowed back with a mad glint to his eyes. “Aye, my friend, I am sure you will, I might just break for some tea, then, if that’s ok!?” Lendrick replied sarcastically. “Fine by me, more to smash, save me a cup though!” The last word yelled louder as another zombie’s brain was crushed by Burdock’s falling mace. Lendrick moved onto the next, his gleaming plate armour and shield raised high. This was the life, vanquishing evil, saving lives. Burdock never felt more alive than right now. It wasn’t all fun and slaughter though, Lendrick thought more sombrely as the next three Ghouls charged. Lendrick remembered a time when he had first met Burdock, and the tragedy surrounding his friends past and their initial time together. Lendrick had known Burdock since they were children, over ten years ago, when Lendrick was only ten years old and his family had moved to the village with the newly built church. The old church had been burned to the ground by a raiding party of Kobolds. Kobolds were hideous goblin-rat like beasts that walked like men and would attack and slaughter anything in their path. Well, the village had been in their path and the church did not survive. Nor did Burdock’s parents, who were seeking refuge in the Church when the Kobolds set it alight. Luckily, Burdock was able to crawl out the rear through a small window, too small for his parents and had to watch as they went up in flames. The church was completely destroyed, and eventually had to be rebuilt, much like the village folk’s faith. Burdock swore an oath to the cross that day, that he would seek vengeance for his parents, but, befitting their memory, would study and train as a warrior cleric of the Church of Gaia. That was when Lendrick first met him, the new church had been finished and Lendrick’s priesthood training had begun. Lendrick and Burdock became fast friends, being of similar age, Lendrick was keenly interested in the warrior priest training, however, enjoyed the battle a bit too much. Without the tempered hand of a Cleric. The head priest nevertheless saw potential in Lendrick. Lendrick was sourced out to a cadre of warrior-priests to further teach him in the martial arts of priesthood and to don the armour of a warrior of light. Lendrick spent years of intensive warrior training and arduous study of the CODEX and edicts that govern the church. With the help of Burdock, and Lendrick helping to motivate him as well, they both achieved their chosen calling. Burdock became a Cleric of Gaia and Lendrick was welcomed into the arms of the holy warrior cadre of Paladins. In recognition and gratitude of his training and acceptance, Lendrick formed an elite group of people to help spread the light into the darkness of Novia. Hence, the knighthood of the Knights of Novia was established. Being a flexible group, it is ever expanding and has the full backing of the Church of Gaia. The three ghouls having fallen before Light fire, Lendrick took a breath and looked around. The Knights were finishing off some straggling undead that wouldn’t stay down, but ultimately the main fight was done. Wiping blood off the end of his mace, Burdock strode over to Lendrick. “A good fight, my old friend! I feel energised to keep going, the Blackblade couldn’t be more than a day’s ride”. “Aye, not far now, but we must tread carefully here, as we have enemies at all sides. It is almost nightfall. We will establish a camp, lay some protective runes, and make for the rift at first light” “Aye, as you say, Lord Commander” “You know I hate it when you call me that, you know you don’t have to right? It’s to keep the discipline with our younger members, not my dearest friend!?” “Aye, I know. I know that it frustrates you. Why do ye think I say it?” And with that mischievous glint back in his eye, Burdock set about making camp. TO BE CONTINUED>
